Strong Men & Women in Virginia History

February 17th through March 31st, 2021 Northumberland Public Library is proud to bring the “Strong Men & Women in Virginia History” Exhibit to the Northern Neck.  Celebrating the achievements of African Americans and their contributions to the commonwealth.

Dominion Energy and the Library of Virginia celebrate the achievements of African-American leaders during their annual “Strong Men & Women in Virginia History” program. The program honors prominent African Americans past and present who have made noteworthy and admirable contributions to the commonwealth, the nation, and their professions.

Dedicated doctors, clergy, educators, lawyers, and civil rights leaders define generations of strong men and women whose tireless work help build communities that ensure equality and justice for all. These leaders seek fair employment and wages. They question unfair policies in schools, healthcare, housing, and voting. They push for inclusion and diversity in workplaces. They raise money and create programs to assist children in need and adults who desire better lives.

Dominion Energy and the Library of Virginia are proud to honor 2021’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History. Their selfless work will continue to inspire emerging leaders who seek even greater levels of achievement. The honorees for 2021 are

  • Krysta N. Jones, political activist
  • Dr. Lerla G. Joseph, physician
  • L. Louise B. Lucas, state senator
  • the. Rev. Stan Maclin, social justice activist, and
  • Evelyn Reid Syphax. Educator

The exhibit will be available for viewing at Northumberland Public Library Monday through Thursday 9-7, Friday 9-5:30 and Saturday 9-3.
